Mumm 36
This is the story of a gripping feat: the story of a Mumm 36, a racing boat, used for fast cruising.
After years of wonderful experiences on the 470, which I had always sailed alone, even on the windy seas off Sardinia, I wanted to try my hand at offshore sailing with the Mumm 36, the boat most similar to that centreboarder: an 11-metre 470!
I registered the boat and equipped it with the essential instrumentation: GPS maps, Radar, Navtex, autopilot, EPIRB, and a PC with MaxSea software.
I took it around the island of Elba single-handedly, then around Corsica, and finally around Italy, starting from La Spezia and stopping in Corsica, Sardinia, the Aeolian Islands, sailing through the Strait of Messina, then Santa Maria di Leuca, Corfu, Croatia, and on to Chioggia, where my journey ended.
Life on board is always busy, everything is open and spacious, there's a little stove for cooking, a storeroom, no showers or cabins, no fridge, no heating, no lounges, curtains or Persian rugs.
The tiller puts you in direct contact with the sea, and the Kevlar sails are very big, meaning you can always get up quite a pace, even with slack winds.
