Transat Jacques Vabre

The Transat Jacques Vabre is a regatta that crosses the Atlantic and the Equator, part of the IMOCA international calendar. Taking part in the seventh edition of the race was Cecilia Carreri, the first Italian woman to accomplish this feat, together with Frenchman Joé Seeten.

Cecilia accomplished this achievement, single-handedly running the project Mare Verticale, the name she gave the boat, an Open 60 produced by the French firm Finot-Conq.

The race set sail from Le Havre, and having passed the Equator, Cecilia completed the crossing to Salvador de Bahia in Brazil, for a total of 4,500 nautical miles. Upon her arrival, she was received by the Italian Honorary Consul. The other Italian in the race, Giovanni Soldini, with his Telecom Italia trimaran, together with Vittorio Malingri, were wrecked off the African coast.

Cecilia, having finished the race, decided to sail back across the Atlantic, leaving just a few days after her arrival, and making the crossing from Salvador de Bahia to Dunkerque in the middle of winter, in December, tackling big storms and facing the danger of a wreck, between the Canary Islands and the Azores.
